eCommerce Mission Control
eCommerce Insights from Astronaut Party
Your weekly briefing on whatβs actually moving the needle in eCommerce performance marketing.
This Week's TL;DR
Google Ads just announced AI Max for Shopping campaigns, AI Brief, and text disclaimers β giving AI more control over your Shopping ads ahead of Marketing Live on May 20
Meta launched AI Connectors (MCP server + CLI) in open beta, letting brands manage ad accounts through ChatGPT and Claude with full read/write access
Shopify crushed Q1 with $100B+ in GMV and 34% revenue growth, while AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores jumped 8x YoY and AI-referred orders surged 13x
π’ Ads: Google Expands AI Max to Shopping Campaigns
What happened: On May 5, Google announced three AI Max updates ahead of its Marketing Live event on May 20:
AI Max for Shopping β Google can now generate text ads from your Merchant Center data within Shopping campaigns. Your Shopping campaign may serve text-based ads (not just PLAs), and advertisers who opt in get placement in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
AI Brief β A new feature that lets you set natural-language guidelines for Google's AI, like "include pricing to pre-qualify users" or "don't show ads for queries with 'cheap.'" Rolling out to AI Max for Search first, then PMax and Shopping.
Text Disclaimers for Search β Show terms, conditions, and disclosures in ad descriptions without pinning or hurting ad strength scores. Max 90 characters, lives in the Assets section.
Why it matters for DTC brands: AI Max for Shopping blurs the line between Shopping and Search. Your product feed data could now power text ads shown on queries you never explicitly targeted. Brands with rich, accurate Merchant Center data will have a major advantage. Brands with thin product feeds will get thin (or wrong) AI-generated copy.
Key detail: Google hasn't confirmed whether advertisers can opt out of text customization and final URL expansion for Shopping β something that's available in Search. This means Google may be sending traffic to pages you didn't choose.
π₯ Action item: Audit your Merchant Center product descriptions this week. Make sure titles, descriptions, and attributes are detailed and accurate β they're now the raw material for AI-generated ad copy across both Shopping and Search placements.
π’ Ads: Meta Launches AI Connectors for Ad Management
What happened: On April 30, Meta launched AI Connectors in open beta β a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server and command-line interface (CLI) that connects your Meta ad account directly to AI tools like ChatGPT and Claude. This gives AI assistants full read and write access to your campaigns.
What you can do with it today:
Query campaign performance in real time
Create new campaigns, ad sets, and ads through natural language
Update budgets and bid strategies without opening Ads Manager
Analyze creative performance and catch fatigue patterns before ROAS tanks
Why it matters for DTC brands: If your media buyers spend hours each week pulling reports, building pivot tables, and manually adjusting budgets across dozens of ad sets, this is a meaningful time-saver. For 7- and 8-figure brands, the biggest wins come from real-time anomaly detection (catching CPM spikes before they drain budget), automated reporting, and rapid testing velocity through programmatic campaign management.
Important caveats: This is still open beta. You need a paid tier (Claude Pro/Team or equivalent). Meta released these connectors after reports of advertisers getting accounts restricted for using unsanctioned third-party AI tools β this is now Meta's official stamp of approval for AI-powered ad management.
π₯ Action item: If you're spending $50K+/month on Meta, have your team set up the MCP connection this week. Start with read-only reporting queries to get comfortable before moving to write operations. Setup takes under 10 minutes.
What happened: Shopify reported Q1 2026 results on May 5 with massive numbers:
$100B+ in Gross Merchandise Volume for the quarter
34% revenue growth with consistent free cash flow margins
AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores up 8x YoY
Orders from AI-powered searches up 13x YoY
New buyer orders from AI channels occurred at nearly 2x the rate of other channels
Shopify president Harley Finkelstein said merchants discoverable on AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot are "attracting buyers they may not otherwise have seen." Shopify is the only platform enabling discovery and sales within ChatGPT, Copilot, and Google from a single system of record, with over 1 billion product listings optimized for AI.
Why it matters for DTC brands: The data is unambiguous β AI-referred shoppers are higher-intent and higher-converting. Adobe Analytics found AI-referred shoppers convert 31% better than all other traffic, with 254% higher revenue per visit YoY during the 2025 holiday season. According to eMarketer, if agentic commerce scales as projected, US eCommerce sales could be 11.5% higher than baseline by 2030, reaching nearly $2 trillion.
The landing page angle: Your product pages now serve two audiences β humans who visit AND the AI systems that decide whether to send them. McKinsey found 50% of consumers now use AI when searching online, and 44% of those say it's become their primary search method. Brands need machine-readable pricing, structured product schema, clear delivery/return policies, and FAQ content that AI can parse.
π₯ Action item: Check whether your Shopify products are discoverable on ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode. Search for your products by category (not brand name) and see if you show up. If not, update your product structured data, enrich descriptions, and ensure your Shopify catalog is opted in to AI discovery channels.
